IRCC's current published service standard for PR card renewal is approximately 28 days when you file online with complete documentation in May 2026. This is a major improvement from the 18-25 month backlogs seen during 2022-2024, and brings PR card processing back near pre-pandemic norms. Paper applications run longer, typically 2-3 months. Files flagged for residency review (close to the 730-day threshold, gaps in travel history, or unusual passport stamping patterns) can extend to 4-6 months.

To be eligible for PR card renewal, you must have been physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) within the rolling 5-year period before IRCC assesses your application, or qualify under a specific exception: accompanying a Canadian-citizen spouse abroad, working for a Canadian business abroad, or accompanying a PR spouse working abroad for a Canadian business. If you don't meet the residency obligation, the application may be refused and your PR status can be revoked.

Apply 30-60 days before your current card expires to avoid any travel gap. While your PR status is permanent and doesn't end when the card does, airlines require a valid PR card to board commercial flights to Canada. If your card has expired and you are outside Canada, apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) at a visa office abroad rather than a card renewal — only PRTDs can be filed from outside Canada.
