IRCC conducts targeted draws for in-demand occupations with lower CRS cut-offs. These categories offer excellent opportunities for qualified candidates.
Doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals
French speakers with strong language skills
Science, technology, engineering, and math professionals
Certified tradespeople with in-demand skills
IRCC announced a new Express Entry category specifically for international doctors with at least 1 year of Canadian work experience in an eligible occupation, gained within the last 3 years. This creates a simpler path to PR for physicians already contributing to Canada's healthcare system.
French speakers enjoy significantly lower CRS cut-offs in dedicated draws. Achieving CLB 7+ in French adds 25-50 bonus CRS points and qualifies you for French-language draws. Canada aims for 10.5% Francophone immigration outside Quebec by 2028.

CRS cut-off scores vary by draw type. In January 2026, CEC draws had cut-offs around 509-511, while French proficiency draws are as low as 399. Provincial nominee draws require higher scores (700+) due to the 600-point PNP bonus. Category-based draws (healthcare, French, STEM) often have lower cut-offs. Most successful applicants without PNP have scores above 480.
IRCC aims to process most Express Entry applications within 6 months of receiving a complete application. However, processing times can vary. You also need to factor in time for language tests, ECA, and profile creation before receiving an ITA.
No, a job offer is not required for Express Entry. Since March 2025, LMIA-based job offers no longer add CRS points. Focus on other factors like language scores, education, Canadian work experience, and provincial nominations.
Since 2023, IRCC conducts category-based draws targeting specific groups: healthcare workers, STEM professionals, French speakers, trade workers, transport workers, and agriculture/agri-food workers. These draws often have lower CRS cut-offs than general draws.
Your Express Entry profile is valid for 12 months. If you don't receive an ITA within that time, you can resubmit your profile. Make sure to keep your information current and update any changes (new job, language scores, etc.).
