Which absences still count toward the 730 days?

Short answer: Three categories of time abroad count as if you had been in Canada. Days accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse or common-law partner, or a parent if you are a child. Days employed full-time outside Canada by a Canadian business or the public service. And days accompanying a permanent resident spouse, partner or parent who is themselves employed full-time outside Canada by a Canadian business or the public service.

These exceptions are narrower than they sound. "Canadian business" has a specific statutory meaning, and being paid by a Canadian company while working abroad indefinitely for a foreign client does not automatically qualify. Assignments structured as a temporary posting from a Canadian operation, with a expectation of return, sit far more comfortably inside the provision.

If your count falls short, do not simply file and hope. Humanitarian and compassionate considerations can be raised, and there is an appeal route to the Immigration Appeal Division, but both work far better as a prepared argument than as a reaction to a refusal.

What is a Permanent Resident Travel Document, and when do you need one?

Short answer: A PR travel document (PRTD) is a single-use document that lets a permanent resident board a commercial carrier back to Canada when they are outside the country without a valid PR card. IMM 5444 covers both applications, which is why the form's title names them together. You apply for a PRTD from outside Canada, through a visa office.

The practical trigger is a card that expires while you are abroad. A PR card cannot be renewed from outside Canada, so if yours lapses during a long trip, the PRTD is how you get home. The same residency obligation applies, and the officer assessing your PRTD is making the same 730-day calculation.

Permanent residents who can reach Canada by land or sea from the United States are in a different position, since carrier document requirements apply to commercial air travel.

Why does my IMM 5444 say in progress?

Short answer: "In progress" means IRCC has accepted your application into processing and is working through it. It is a normal status, not a warning sign, and it typically persists for most of the processing period. It does not indicate a problem, a request for more documents, or a decision either way.

Status labels in the portal move slowly and in coarse steps, which makes them a poor guide to how your file is actually doing. If your application has passed the posted processing time and the status has not shifted, the informative move is to request your file notes rather than to keep refreshing the portal. What if your residency count falls short?

Do not file and hope. An application that discloses fewer than 730 days invites a residency determination, and a negative one can put your status itself at risk rather than just delaying a card. The options that exist, humanitarian and compassionate considerations or an appeal to the Immigration Appeal Division, work far better as a prepared argument submitted with the application than as a response to a refusal.

Count carefully first, including the absences that still qualify as presence. If the total is close to 730, the exact dates matter and reconstructing them from border records is worth the effort.

Most applicants no longer download it. IRCC processes permanent resident card applications through the Permanent Residence portal, where you complete IMM 5444 as a digital form on screen, and IRCC's guidance says not to fill out the PDF if you are applying online. If you are among the applicants still filing on paper, download the current PDF, dated 09-2024, only from IRCC's own page on canada.ca, and read it alongside Guide 5445. Avoid third-party form sites and cached copies: some indexed versions are old enough to carry the pre-2015 Citizenship and Immigration Canada branding.

Why does my IMM 5444 say in progress?

"In progress" simply means your application has been accepted into processing and IRCC is working on it. It is the normal status for most of the time your file is open, and it does not signal a problem or a pending request. Portal statuses update in coarse steps and lag the actual work on your file, so they are not a reliable way to judge progress. What is appendix a residency obligation of IMM 5444?

Appendix A is the residency obligation section of the permanent resident card application. It requires you to list every trip outside Canada over the past five years and calculate the total days you were physically present in Canada. Under section 28 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, you must be present at least 730 days in every rolling five-year period. Certain absences count as presence: accompanying a Canadian citizen spouse, partner or parent, being employed full-time abroad by a Canadian business or the public service, or accompanying a permanent resident family member who is. Declare every trip, since officers cross-check against border records.

How to apply for a PR card renewal?

Apply through the Permanent Residence portal. Create or sign in to your account, start a permanent resident card application, and complete the digital IMM 5444 along with Appendix A, the residency obligation calculation. You will upload a copy of your current or expired card, identity documents, and photographs meeting IRCC's specifications, which are set out in Guide 5445. Apply before your card expires where possible, because a card cannot be renewed from outside Canada: if it lapses while you are abroad, you need a permanent resident travel document instead.
