Step-by-Step Timeline
Short answer: Six stages โ application prep 1 to 3 months gathering relationship evidence and police certificates, submission and AOR 1 to 4 weeks, sponsor eligibility assessment 1 to 3 months (no minimum income for spousal unlike PGP), applicant processing 6 to 10 months (longest), medical and biometrics, then decision and landing 2 to 4 weeks.
Here is what a typical spousal sponsorship timeline looks like from start to finish:
Stage 1: Preparing Your Application (1-3 months)
Gathering documents takes most couples 4-8 weeks. You need proof of your relationship (photos, chat logs, travel receipts, joint accounts), police certificates from every country you have lived in for 6+ months, medical exams, and financial documents showing the sponsor can support the applicant.
Stage 2: Submission and AOR (1-4 weeks)
After you submit, IRCC checks that your application is complete. If it passes the initial review, you receive an Acknowledgment of Receipt (AOR). If something is missing, IRCC returns the entire package and you start over.
Stage 3: Sponsor Eligibility Assessment (1-3 months)
IRCC verifies that the sponsor meets income and eligibility requirements. For spousal sponsorship, there is no minimum income requirement (unlike parent/grandparent sponsorship), but the sponsor must not be on social assistance for reasons other than disability. IRCC sets out who can sponsor and who can be sponsored on its family sponsorship and sponsor your spouse, partner or child pages.
Stage 4: Applicant Processing (6-10 months)
This is the longest stage. IRCC reviews the relationship evidence, conducts background checks, and may request an interview. Most applications are decided based on documents alone. An interview is requested only if IRCC has specific concerns about the genuineness of the relationship.
Stage 5: Medical and Biometrics (if not already done)
Medical exams are valid for 12 months, so timing matters. If you did your medical early and processing takes longer than expected, you may need to redo it.
Stage 6: Decision and Landing (2-4 weeks)
Once approved, outland applicants receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and a visa to travel to Canada. Inland applicants receive their COPR directly and can complete landing at a local IRCC office.
Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) Processing Time
Short answer: Inland SOWP processes in 4 to 6 months and lets your spouse work for any Canadian employer while waiting on the PR application; SOWP is tied to the spousal sponsorship โ if the PR application is refused, the work permit is also cancelled; valid until decision on the PR application.
If you apply inland, your spouse can apply for a spousal open work permit at the same time. This allows them to work for any employer in Canada while the PR application is being processed.
Current SOWP processing time: 4-6 months
The SOWP is tied to the spousal sponsorship application. If the PR application is refused, the work permit is also cancelled. The SOWP is valid until a decision is made on the PR application.
You can apply for the SOWP at the same time as the inland sponsorship application or after receiving your AOR.
