IMM 5476 2026: Use of a Representative, Version 11-2025 Only

IMM 5476 is the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Use of a Representative form. The current release is 11-2025, last updated November 2025. IRCC's form page still says previous versions were accepted until 12 March 2026. That date has passed. File 11-2025 only. An older PDF from a third-party site will not do.

Short answer: IMM 5476 authorizes a named person to conduct business with IRCC and the CBSA on one specific application. Complete it only if you are appointing a representative, updating that person's contact details, cancelling an appointment, cancelling one representative and appointing another, or withdrawing yourself as a representative. You are not obliged to hire anyone. IRCC treats applicants with and without a representative the same. A representative does not get special attention, faster processing, or a better outcome.

Download it on a computer. IRCC says the form may not open on tablets or phones. Open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader version 10 or higher.
Once appointed, the representative receives all correspondence from IRCC or the CBSA in place of you, not in addition to you. You can appoint only one representative at a time for each application. Dependent children aged 18 or older must complete their own copy if a representative is also conducting business on their behalf.
Which sections do you fill in?
Short answer: You never complete every section. Section A identifies the applicant and is always required. Section E is the applicant declaration and is always required, except when a representative who is withdrawing cannot get the applicant's signature and signs the declaration in section D instead. Sections B, C, and D depend on the action. Filling in the wrong block, or skipping E because the form looks done, is how files get sent back.

Section D belongs to the representative, not to the applicant. Signatures are section E. If you are both cancelling and appointing, check the matching box and complete A, B, C, and E.
On a sponsorship application, a spouse or common-law partner included in the same request signs in the box on this form and does not file a separate copy. On any other application, a spouse or common-law partner needs a separate authorization even if they are on the same file. That split is easy to miss.

Who counts as a paid representative?
Short answer: Anyone who charges a fee or receives any other compensation for representing or advising you. The test is payment, not job title. If someone else pays the representative, IRCC still treats that person as paid. Paid representatives who are not in good standing with a designated body cause the application to be returned. Unpaid representatives are friends, family, or professionals who will not charge or receive consideration. IRCC will deal with an unpaid representative you appoint. You do not have to pay someone to act for you.
Paid representatives IRCC will deal with:
consultants who are members in good standing of the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC)
lawyers and paralegals who are members in good standing of a Canadian provincial or territorial law society, and students-at-law under their supervision
notaries who are members in good standing of the Chambre des notaires du Québec, and students-at-law under their supervision
Anyone who represents or advises you for payment without being an authorized representative, or without a specific agreement with the Government of Canada, is breaking the law. That covers advice given before or after an application is made. Confirm standing on IRCC's learn about representatives page before you write a name in section B. Put the membership ID on the form as it appears on the organization's list. If you appoint a student-at-law, include the supervising lawyer's information and membership ID. The supervising lawyer must also sign.

How is IMM 5475 different from IMM 5476?
Short answer: IMM 5475 is the Authority to Release Personal Information to a Designated Individual. It lets IRCC give someone information about your application, such as status. That person cannot conduct business on your behalf. IMM 5476 is the form that grants the power to act. If you only want a relative to check a file, use IMM 5475. If you want a consultant or lawyer to submit documents and answer IRCC, use IMM 5476, and accept that mail then goes to them.
The IMM 5475 page last updated the PDF in May 2021. The form page stamp is 30 September 2024. Choosing 5476 when you wanted 5475 is how people stop receiving their own letters.

Short answer: Download IMM 5476 from the official IRCC form page on a desktop. The current PDF is version 11-2025. Save it, then open it in Adobe Acrobat Reader 10 or higher. Do not use a phone, a browser PDF viewer, or a commercial form-filling site. Those copies are often years out of date.
If you submit through a portal or secure account, IRCC accepts a wet (hand) signature, an e-signature, or a thumbprint if the person cannot make a mark. E-signature includes a typed name, Adobe Fill & Sign or DocuSign, a scan or image of a signature, or a check box as indicated. If you submit outside a portal or secure account, IRCC wants a wet signature. A scanned wet signature is acceptable. A thumbprint is acceptable if the person is illiterate or cannot make a mark for a physical reason.
Download the PDF from that IRCC page. The current file is version 01-11-2025. That is the file to keep.
How do you submit IMM 5476, including after you have already applied?
Short answer: If the immigration or citizenship application is not in yet, upload IMM 5476 with the online package, or send it with a paper package to the address in that application's guide. If the application is already in, submit the form through the IRCC web form, or mail it to the office that is processing the file if you know the address. You must notify IRCC if the representative's contact information changes, if you change representatives, or if you cancel the appointment.
The web form IRCC points to is Client Contact form 71. Use it for a form that is late to a file that is already in processing. Do not assume a portal upload is still open after you hit submit on the main application.
Keep a copy of what you sent. If you appoint someone and then hear nothing, the first check is whether correspondence is landing in the representative's inbox instead of yours.
What gets an application returned?
Short answer: Naming a paid representative who is not in good standing. Using a pre-11-2025 PDF after 12 March 2026. Appointing two people on one application. Completing the wrong sections. Skipping the signatures in section E. Using IMM 5475 when you needed 5476, or the reverse. Forgetting that an 18-year-old dependant needs their own form. Those are paperwork errors. IRCC can return the whole application for them.
Before you name anyone, confirm CICC, law-society, or Chambre standing yourself. Then be clear about what you are signing. IMM 5476 redirects correspondence and hands over the authority to act. If all you wanted was a status check, that is IMM 5475.
