حول Visitor Visa Extension

To extend your visitor visa in Canada, you apply for a visitor record. A visitor record is the document IRCC issues to extend how long you can stay in Canada as a visitor. It is not a new visa. You apply online from inside Canada, before your current authorized stay ends.

Most visitors are initially authorized to stay for up to 6 months from their entry date (check the stamp in your passport or your entry document). If you apply to extend before the date you are supposed to leave, you can legally stay in Canada until IRCC decides your application. IRCC calls this maintained status (it was previously called implied status). If you apply after your status has expired, you have lost that protection and may need to restore your status instead.

Visitor visa, visitor record and eTA are three different things. The visitor visa (Temporary Resident Visa, the sticker in your passport) or the eTA lets you travel to and enter Canada. The visitor record sets how long you may stay once you are already here. Even if your visa expires while you are in Canada, you can still extend your stay with a visitor record. You only need a new visa or eTA if you leave and want to come back. A visitor record can also be used by workers and students who want to switch to visitor status. It never allows you to work or study.

Processing times for visitor extensions are long (385 days on IRCC's October 1, 2026 update), so apply as early as you can.

المواعيد الهامة

  • If you are refused, you can only stay until the expiry date of your current status

كيفية التقديم

عملية التقديم خطوة بخطوة

اتبع هذه الخطوات لتمديد وضعك في كندا بنجاح.

1

Determine Your Current Status Expiry Date

Check your passport stamp, visitor visa, or port of entry document to determine when your current authorized stay expires. If no date is specified, it's typically 6 months from your entry date. Calculate the deadline for your extension application (at least 30 days before expiry).

2

Prepare Your Extension Justification

Write a detailed letter explaining why you need to extend your stay in Canada. Include specific reasons, planned activities, and why you cannot complete your visit within the original timeframe. Be honest and provide supporting evidence for your claims.

3

Gather Financial and Supporting Documents

Collect recent bank statements showing sufficient funds, proof of accommodation arrangements, travel insurance, and evidence of ties to your home country. Demonstrate that you can support yourself financially and will return home after your visit.

4

Create an IRCC Online Account

Register for an IRCC secure account if you don't already have one. This will be your portal for submitting the application, uploading documents, and tracking your application status.

5

Complete the Application Form

Fill out the Application to Change Conditions, Extend my Stay or Remain in Canada as a Visitor (IMM 5708) through your online account. Provide accurate information about your current status, travel history, and extension request details.

6

Upload Documents and Pay Fees

Scan and upload all required supporting documents in the correct format. Pay the $100 government processing fee and $85 biometrics fee (if applicable) using a credit or debit card through the secure portal.

7

Submit and Monitor Your Application

Review your application carefully before submitting. After submission, you have maintained status (previously called implied status) if you applied before your current status expired, so you can stay in Canada until IRCC decides. Check your IRCC account regularly for updates and respond promptly to any document requests.

8

Receive Your Decision and Visitor Record

If you are approved, IRCC sends a decision letter and mails your visitor record, which should reach you within six weeks of the decision letter. If it does not arrive, contact IRCC. If your application is refused, you can only stay in Canada until the expiry date of your current temporary resident status, so plan your departure or your next application before that date.

الاخطاء الشائعة

اخطاء يجب تجنبها

تعلم من تجارب الاخرين وتجنب هذه الاخطاء الشائعة عند التقديم للتمديد.

Not knowing when their status expires - Check your documents carefully, not just your visa expiry
Insufficient explanation for extension - Provide detailed, credible reasons with supporting evidence
Weak proof of temporary intent - Show strong ties to home country and clear departure plans
Inadequate financial documentation - Demonstrate sufficient funds for the entire extended period
Applying too close to expiry date - Given processing times of around 385 days, apply as early as possible
Applying for a new visitor visa instead of a visitor record - To stay longer inside Canada you need the visitor record; a new visa only matters if you leave and re-enter

الاسئلة الشائعة

الاسئلة المتكررة

اسئلة شائعة حول Visitor Visa Extension

How do I extend my visitor visa in Canada?
You do not extend the visa itself. You apply for a visitor record online through your IRCC secure account, from inside Canada, using the Application to Change Conditions, Extend my Stay or Remain in Canada as a Visitor (IMM 5708). Upload your passport, current status document, a letter explaining why you need more time and proof that you can support yourself, pay the $100 fee (plus $85 biometrics if asked), and submit before your current status expires. IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days before your status ends.
What's the difference between a visitor visa and a visitor record?
A visitor visa (also called a Temporary Resident Visa or TRV) is the sticker placed in your passport that allows you to travel to Canada and request entry at the border. A visitor record is a document issued by IRCC that specifies how long you're allowed to stay in Canada once you're already here. When you apply to 'extend your visitor visa,' you're actually applying for a visitor record to extend your authorized stay. Your original visa may expire while you're in Canada, but as long as you have a valid visitor record, you can legally remain in Canada. If you leave, you need a valid visitor visa, or an eTA if you are from a visa-exempt country, to come back. The visitor record is not a travel document.
Can I stay in Canada while I wait for the visitor record decision?
Yes, if you applied before your current authorized stay expired. IRCC calls this maintained status: you can legally stay in Canada, under the same conditions as before, until a decision is made on your application. Maintained status does not apply to people applying for a temporary resident permit. Keep your submission receipt as proof that you applied on time.
What if my visitor status has already expired?
You can apply to restore your status as a visitor within 90 days of the day your status expired. IRCC lists the restoration fee for a visitor at $246.25, and you cannot work or study while you wait. After 90 days, restoration is no longer possible. Do not wait: apply as soon as you notice the date has passed.
What happens if my visitor record extension is refused?
If IRCC refuses your application, you can only stay in Canada until the expiry date of your current temporary resident status. After that date you must leave Canada unless you have another valid status. The refusal letter explains the reasons. You can apply again if you can fix the problem, for example with stronger proof of funds or a clearer reason for your stay, but an application made after your status has expired has to be a restoration application.
How long can I extend my visitor status in Canada?
There's no fixed maximum for visitor extensions, but IRCC typically grants extensions of up to 6 months at a time. The length granted depends on your specific circumstances, the reason for extension, and your demonstrated ability to support yourself financially. You must show that your visit remains temporary and that you'll leave Canada when your authorized stay ends. Multiple extensions are possible, but each requires a new application and IRCC may scrutinize repeated extension requests more carefully to ensure you're not attempting to live in Canada permanently as a visitor.
Can I work while on a visitor record extension?
No, a visitor record does not authorize you to work in Canada. Visitors are only permitted to engage in tourism, visiting family and friends, and limited business activities (such as attending meetings or conferences, but not employment). If you're caught working without authorization, you could face serious consequences including deportation and being barred from returning to Canada. If you need to work, you must apply for a work permit, which is a separate process with different requirements.
How long does a visitor record extension take?
IRCC's posted processing time for a visitor extension is 385 days (about 12.5 months) on its October 1, 2026 update. The figure changes as IRCC updates it, so check IRCC's processing times tool before you apply. Because of this, apply as early as possible, ideally many months before your current status expires. If you applied before your status expired, you keep maintained status while you wait. Leaving and re-entering Canada during this period can put your plans at risk, because you would need a valid visa or eTA to return.
Can I leave Canada while my extension application is pending?
You can leave temporarily, but IRCC warns that if you do not have a new document that lets you re-enter Canada, you will have to re-apply and pay another processing fee. Your visitor record application is only for staying inside Canada, so you would also need a valid visitor visa, or an eTA if you are from a visa-exempt country, to come back. If you think you might need to travel during the long processing period, consider this before you apply. In some cases it is simpler to leave Canada when your stay ends and apply for a new visitor visa or eTA to return.
