About LMIA Work Permit
The Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that a Canadian employer must obtain before hiring a foreign worker. It demonstrates that there is a genuine need for a foreign worker and that no Canadian is available to do the job.
The LMIA process requires employers to advertise the position and demonstrate recruitment efforts. Once IRCC approves the LMIA, the foreign worker can apply for a work permit.
LMIA-based work permits are employer-specific, meaning you can only work for the employer named on your permit. These permits can serve as stepping stones to permanent residence through Express Entry or provincial programs.

Employer Obtains LMIA
Your Canadian employer applies to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) for an LMIA. They must prove recruitment efforts and demonstrate need for a foreign worker.

If approved, the employer receives a positive LMIA and provides you with a copy and the job offer letter.

Work Permit Application
Apply for your work permit online or at a visa office. Include the LMIA number, job offer, and supporting documents.

Common questions about LMIA Work Permit
How long does the LMIA process take?
LMIA processing typically takes 2 to 12 weeks depending on the stream (high-wage, low-wage, global talent). After LMIA approval, work permit processing takes an additional 2 to 8 weeks.
Can I change employers on an LMIA work permit?
Not directly. You need a new LMIA from the new employer and must apply for a new work permit. You cannot start working for the new employer until the new permit is approved.
Does LMIA add CRS points?
Yes, a valid job offer supported by LMIA adds 50 CRS points for NOC TEER 2/3 occupations or 200 points for NOC TEER 0/1 senior occupations.
Who pays for the LMIA?
The employer pays the $1,000 LMIA processing fee. It is illegal for employers to recover this fee from workers. The worker pays their own work permit fees.
Can my spouse work on my LMIA work permit?
If you have a valid LMIA work permit in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation, your spouse may be eligible for an open work permit.
