A work permit extension allows you to continue working in Canada beyond your current permit's expiration date. Every year, thousands of workers in Canada need to extend their permits to maintain their employment.
If you apply for an extension before your current work permit expires, you gain "implied status" which lets you keep working under the same conditions until IRCC decides on your application. This keeps you legal while you wait.
The process works the same whether you have an employer-specific work permit or an open work permit. We handle both types and can guide you through your specific situation.
Currently hold a valid work permit or have maintained implied status
Applied for extension before your current permit expired
Continue to meet the requirements of your work permit category
Valid passport that won't expire before your requested extension period
No criminal inadmissibility issues
For employer-specific permits: continued valid job offer from your employer
For LMIA-based permits: valid LMIA or LMIA exemption still applies
Meet health requirements if applicable
Valid passport (all pages)
Current work permit (copy)
Letter from employer confirming continued employment
Updated job offer letter with salary and duties
Proof of valid LMIA or LMIA exemption (if applicable)
Proof of compliance with previous work permit conditions
Recent pay stubs or T4 slips
Digital photos meeting specifications
IMM 5710 Application form
Processing fee payment receipt
Look at your current work permit conditions and make sure you qualify for an extension. Check if your LMIA is still valid or if your employer needs to get a new one.
Collect all necessary documents including your employer's support letter, updated job offer, and proof of continued compliance with your work permit conditions.
Fill out IMM 5710 (Application to Change Conditions or Extend Your Stay in Canada as a Worker) and any additional forms required for your specific situation.
Submit your application through the IRCC online portal before your current work permit expires. Pay the $155 processing fee and $85 biometrics fee if required.
If you haven't provided biometrics within the last 10 years, schedule an appointment at a Service Canada location.
Continue working under implied status while your application is processed. Respond promptly to any requests for additional information from IRCC.
Applying after your current work permit has already expired (losing implied status)
Not providing an updated job offer letter from your employer
Using an expired LMIA when a new one is required
Incomplete application forms or missing signatures
Not providing proof of continued employment (pay stubs, T4s)
Leaving Canada while on implied status without proper documentation
Working for a different employer than authorized without updating your permit
Not updating IRCC about changes in employment conditions
As of 2026, work permit extensions take about 4 to 6 months when you apply from inside Canada. Your actual wait depends on how complete your application is and how busy IRCC is. LMIA cases often take longer.
