Canada's construction and manufacturing sectors face persistent labor shortages in skilled trades. Category-based draws for trades occupations have featured some of the lowest CRS cutoffs in Express Entry history.
Trades draws complement the Federal Skilled Trades (FST) program, giving tradespeople multiple pathways to permanent residence. Whether you apply through FST or another program, having a trades occupation can help you get invited faster.
Provincial programs also prioritize tradespeople. Combined with Express Entry, skilled trades workers have excellent prospects for immigrating to Canada.

Eligibility Criteria
Meet these requirements to qualify for Trades Express Entry.
Trades Occupation
Your primary occupation must be in an eligible trades NOC. Includes electricians, plumbers, welders, carpenters, heavy equipment operators, mechanics, and more.
Express Entry Program
Must be eligible under FST (preferred), FSW, or CEC programs.
Work Experience
2 years for FST, 1 year for FSW/CEC. Must be in skilled trades occupation.
Certification
May need job offer or Canadian provincial certification for FST. Trades often require licensing.

What CRS score do I need?
Trades draws have had cutoffs as low as 370-400, significantly lower than any other category. Tradespeople with modest CRS can still receive invitations.
Do I need Canadian certification?
For FST, you need either a Canadian job offer OR provincial certification. Trades draws through other programs may not require certification for eligibility.
Is education required?
No formal education is required for FST eligibility. Trades skills come from apprenticeships and experience. However, education still adds CRS points.
Can I bring my family?
Yes, you can include your spouse and dependent children. Your spouse's skills can also add CRS points.
