Canada has three ways to renew an adult passport: online, in person, and by mail. Online renewal opened nationally in July 2026 and the daily application caps that throttled it at launch are gone, but the eligibility rules for the online route are stricter than most people expect, and one of them is the opposite of what intuition says: if your passport still has more than six months left, you cannot renew it online.
This guide covers who qualifies for each route, what renewal actually costs after the March 2026 fee increase, how long each option takes right now, and the urgent services that exist when a trip is close.
Can you renew your Canadian passport online?
Short answer: Yes, if you clear every item on a strict list. You must be renewing your own adult passport, applied for when you were 16 or older; it must be a regular blue passport, valid for 5 or 10 years, showing your place of birth, and issued within the last 15 years. Your home and mailing address must be in Canada, your passport must expire within the next 6 months or have already expired, and you must not need it for travel in the next 20 business days.
The six-month rule surprises people. Renewing early is normally sensible, but the online system rejects passports with more than six months of validity left. If yours expires next year and you want it renewed now, you are applying in person or by mail.
Two more things before you start. You need a digital photo that meets the government's specifications, taken by a commercial photographer or by someone else following the rules. And your current passport is cancelled the moment you apply, not when the new one arrives, so you cannot book flights on the old document while you wait.
Who cannot renew online at all?
Short answer: Anyone outside Canada, since online renewals are only delivered to Canadian addresses. Anyone whose current passport was issued more than 15 years ago, was a temporary or diplomatic document, or does not show place of birth. Anyone applying for a child: children's passports are never renewed, and every child application is a new application. And anyone changing their name, which also requires a new application rather than a renewal.
If you fall outside the online rules, you have not lost anything: the in-person and mail routes take the same application form, and in person is currently the fastest standard option anyway.

Short answer: The published service standards are 20 business days plus mailing time for online and mail applications, and 10 or 20 business days for in-person applications depending on where you apply, with the 10-day standard at passport offices and certain Service Canada Centres. If mail disruption is a concern for your timeline, applying in person at a location that offers pick-up removes Canada Post from the equation entirely.
What is the fastest way to renew a Canadian passport?
Short answer: Urgent pick-up service, which delivers a passport by the end of the next business day. Below that sits express pick-up at 2 to 9 business days, and an emergency service exists for weekends and statutory holidays. All of these require applying in person, documentation proving the urgency, usually proof of travel, and additional fees on top of the regular passport fee.
Two caveats from IRCC's own guidance. Some locations take at least 3 or 4 business days to process express applications rather than 2, so if you are cutting it close, the specific office matters. And you can request faster service after you have already applied through a normal route if your travel date moves, rather than starting over.
The practical rule: if your trip is inside two weeks, do not apply online. Online applications cannot be expedited into a pick-up, and your old passport is already cancelled once you have applied.
Can you walk into Service Canada for passport renewal?
Short answer: Yes. Passport offices and many Service Canada Centres accept walk-in passport applications, and no appointment is required at most locations, though booking one where available shortens the wait. The 10-business-day processing standard applies at passport offices, while some smaller Service Canada Centres forward applications for processing and carry the 20-day standard instead.
Bring the completed form rather than expecting to fill it out there, plus your photos, references and fee payment. If you need urgent or express service, walk-in at a full passport office is the only way to access it, and you should bring evidence of your travel date.
How many months before expiry can you renew?
Short answer: There is no minimum wait and no penalty for renewing early: you can renew a Canadian passport at any point, and unused validity on the old passport is not added to the new one. The only timing constraint is the online route's requirement that the passport expire within 6 months or already be expired. In person and by mail, you can renew whenever you choose.
The reason to renew well before expiry is other countries' rules, not Canada's. Many destinations require six months of validity beyond your travel dates, so a passport with five months left can be refused boarding even though it is not expired. Check the entry requirements for your destination before deciding the renewal can wait.
An expired passport is not a problem for renewing: passports issued within the last 15 years qualify for renewal whether or not they have expired.
How much does passport renewal cost in 2026?
Short answer: Most passport fees increased on March 31, 2026, so figures in articles written before that date, and many still ranking in search results, are out of date. The current fee depends on whether you choose a 5-year or 10-year passport, whether you are in Canada or abroad, and whether you add urgent, express or weekend service, each of which carries its own additional fee. Check the exact current amounts on IRCC's passport fees page before you pay.
Two payment details catch people out. Many in-Canada passport services cannot be paid online, so confirm your payment options before attempting to pay. And the 10-year passport costs meaningfully less per year of validity than the 5-year, which is why most adults choose it.
What do you need to submit with a renewal?
Short answer: The adult renewal form, your current or expired passport, two identical passport photos taken within the last six months (or one digital photo for online renewals), two references who have known you for at least two years, and the fee. Renewals do not require the guarantor and citizenship documents that first-time applications do, which is what makes renewal the simpler process.
References cannot be family members, and your photographer's information has to appear on printed photos. For the online route, the digital photo has its own specification and is checked when you upload it.
If any of your details have changed in a way the form cannot capture, or your passport is damaged, lost or stolen, you are outside the renewal process and into a new application, which brings back the guarantor requirement and proof of citizenship.
Where can you get help with a passport tied to an immigration file?
Short answer: For a routine renewal, you do not need help: the process is designed for individuals and no representative can speed it up. Where advice earns its place is when a passport interacts with an immigration application, because a renewal at the wrong moment can strand a valid visa or permit in a cancelled document.
If you hold a temporary resident visa, a work or study permit, or a permanent residence application in progress, the passport you renew is not automatically linked to them. A visa in an expired passport is not transferred; you travel with both documents or apply to have the visa reissued. Permit holders need their immigration documents updated to reflect the new passport number for some transactions.
