What Is CELPIP?
Short answer: CELPIP is the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program, an IRCC-recognized English test administered by Prometric Canada (Paragon Testing Enterprises). It was developed at the University of British Columbia and is the fastest English test accepted for Express Entry and PR applications.

CELPIP General vs CELPIP-LS: Which One Do You Need?
Short answer: CELPIP General covers all four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and is used for Express Entry, Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), and most PR streams. CELPIP-LS covers only Listening and Speaking and is used for citizenship applications. Pick the wrong one and you waste the test fee.

CELPIP General is the full test covering all four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. It's used for:

CELPIP-LS (Listening and Speaking) tests only two skills and is used exclusively for Canadian citizenship applications. If you're already a permanent resident and applying for citizenship, you may use CELPIP-LS instead of taking the full test.
For immigration purposes, nearly all applicants need CELPIP General, not LS.
What Is the CELPIP Test Format and How Long Does It Take?
Short answer: CELPIP General is fully computer-based and runs approximately 3 hours (plan 3.5-4 hours including check-in) in one sitting. Listening 47-55 minutes, Reading 55-60 minutes, Writing 53-60 minutes, Speaking 15-20 minutes. The test is proctored throughout at an official test centre.

Speaking (15-20 minutes): You speak into a microphone and respond to eight different speaking tasks. You read prompts on screen and have time to prepare. Speaking tasks range from personal descriptions to opinion-based responses.
The entire test is proctored. A test administrator monitors you via camera throughout.
How Does Your CELPIP Score Convert to a CLB Level?
Short answer: CELPIP scores convert directly to CLB levels: CELPIP 4 = CLB 4, CELPIP 5 = CLB 5, and so on through CELPIP 12 = CLB 12. No additional math required, unlike IELTS where General Training scores follow a separate conversion table.

Important: You receive a score for each skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). Your overall CLB level is your lowest score across the four skills. If you score 10 in Listening, 10 in Reading, 9 in Writing, and 10 in Speaking, your CLB level is 9 (the lowest skill). This matters for Express Entry because programs have minimum requirements in all four skills.

How Many CRS Points Does Your CELPIP Score Earn?
Short answer: Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points give language the heaviest weight in Express Entry. CLB 9 in all four skills earns 32 single-applicant CRS points or 29 with spouse points per skill. CLB 10+ earns 34/32. CLB 7 earns 17/16, the minimum for Federal Skilled Worker. Pushing from CLB 7 to CLB 9 typically adds 60-100 total CRS once second-language and skill-transferability bonuses are included.
Language carries the heaviest weight in Express Entry's CRS. A single applicant with CLB 10 across all four skills earns 136 points from language alone. Education tops out at 150 points, work experience and age each cap at 100. Strong language scores move you up the pool faster than any other input you can change.

How Do You Book a CELPIP Test Date?
Short answer: Book at celpip.ca for test dates in Canada (multiple weekly dates in major cities) and in partner countries including India, UAE, Australia, and select others. CELPIP is not available in Iran; Iranian applicants typically book in UAE or Turkey.

Where Can You Take the CELPIP Test Outside Canada?

Iranian applicants book in UAE or Turkey. Africa, Pakistan, and most South American countries currently lack CELPIP centres; IELTS is the default for these regions.

India: CELPIP is available in 9 cities (New Delhi, Gurgaon, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Chandigarh). Tests run on Saturdays with morning and afternoon sessions. Book 4-6 weeks in advance.
Middle East: Dubai and other UAE centres have regular CELPIP availability. This is the closest option for Iranian applicants, though any centre with reliable infrastructure works.
Iran: CELPIP is not available in Iran. Iranian applicants must travel to a neighbouring country to take the test. The Dubai knowledge village centre is common, with weekly slots available.
An important note: IRCC takes test centre fraud very seriously, particularly in India and other high-volume regions. Take your test only at official CELPIP centres listed on celpip.ca. Using proxy test takers or fraudulent scores results in permanent ban from Canadian immigration and criminal charges. Your test results are verified against your identity documents at the test centre.
How Will 2026 Express Entry Reforms Affect CELPIP Requirements?
Short answer: As of April 2026, IRCC is consulting on potentially lowering the minimum CLB requirement from CLB 7 to CLB 6 across all four language abilities. The consultation runs until May 24, 2026 and is not yet law. Track the IRCC consultation page for the final decision.
