Renewal for a permanent resident card in Canada is the process by which a current PR replaces an expiring, expired, lost, or stolen card. The PR card itself proves your permanent resident status and is required to re-enter Canada by commercial vehicle (plane, train, bus, or ferry). Your underlying PR status does not expire when the card does โ the card is valid for five years, but your status is permanent unless formally revoked.
To qualify for PR card renewal, you must meet the residency obligation: physical presence in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) within the rolling 5-year period immediately before IRCC assesses your application. Time accompanying a Canadian-citizen spouse abroad, or working abroad for a Canadian business, can count toward residency in narrow circumstances. The renewal fee is $50 CAD and applications must be submitted from within Canada using form IMM 5444.
As of May 2026, IRCC processing time for PR card renewal is approximately 28 days โ back near pre-pandemic norms after the 2022-2024 backlog. The fastest path is online submission via the PR card portal with complete documentation; paper applications take longer. If your card has already expired and you're inside Canada, you can still apply and continue living here; if you're outside Canada with an expired card, you must apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) at a visa office abroad to return.

Use IRCC's residency calculator or create a detailed spreadsheet documenting every day of the last five years. List all trips outside Canada with exact dates, destinations, and purposes. Ensure you have at least 730 days of physical presence in Canada. Gather evidence of your time in Canada.
Gather all passports (current and expired) from the last five years, including those from any citizenship you hold. Collect boarding passes, travel itineraries, hotel bookings, or other evidence of your travel history. These prove your absences from and returns to Canada.
Visit a professional photographer who understands IRCC PR card photo requirements. You need two identical photos taken within the last six months, meeting specific size, background, and quality standards. Non-compliant photos will delay your application.
Download and complete form IMM 5444 (Application for a Permanent Resident Card). Fill it out accurately and completely, answering all questions about your residency, travel history, and current status. Sign and date the form.
Photocopy all required documents including your PR card, passports, identification, and residency evidence. Organize documents clearly with a checklist. Include explanations for any gaps in your residency or unusual circumstances.
Pay the $50 PR card renewal fee online through IRCC's payment portal or in person at designated locations. Print your receipt and include it with your application package as proof of payment.
Mail your complete application package to the PR Card Processing Centre in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Use a trackable mail service to confirm delivery. Keep copies of everything you submitted. Monitor for any requests from IRCC for additional documentation.
