The Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) allows spouses and common-law partners of certain temporary residents to work for any employer in Canada. This supports families by allowing both partners to contribute financially.
Eligibility depends on the principal applicant's status. Spouses of skilled workers (NOC TEER 0-3) with valid work permits are typically eligible. Spouses of certain international students may also qualify.
Changes in 2024 restricted SOWPs for spouses of some student categories. Currently, spouses of students in masters, doctoral, and professional programs remain eligible.
