If you need more time to complete your studies in Canada, you can apply to extend your study permit. This is a common situation for students who need additional time for their program, want to pursue further studies, or are changing programs.
The key to a successful study permit extension is timing and preparation. You must apply before your current permit expires to maintain your legal status through "implied status." This allows you to continue studying while your extension application is being processed.
As of 2026, processing times for study permit extensions submitted from within Canada typically range from 60 to 120 days. Given these timelines, we recommend applying at least 3-4 months before your current permit expires.
Our RCIC-licensed consultants can review your situation and ensure your extension application is complete and submitted correctly.
