A study permit extension lets international students keep studying in Canada after their current permit expires. Your program took longer than expected? Want to take another program? Need to change schools? You need an extension to stay legal.
Under implied status rules, if you apply before your permit expires, you can keep studying at the same school under the same conditions until IRCC decides. This means no gap in your studies while you wait.
Missing a deadline or submitting the wrong documents can derail your studies and your future career plans. Getting your extension right the first time saves you stress and keeps your academic timeline on track.

Request an updated letter of acceptance from your Designated Learning Institution confirming your continued enrollment and expected program completion date.
Prepare bank statements, proof of GIC funds, scholarship letters, or sponsor letters showing you have sufficient funds for tuition and living expenses.
Fill out IMM 5709 (Application to Change Conditions, Extend My Stay or Remain in Canada as a Student) with accurate information about your studies and situation.
Submit your application through the IRCC online portal. Pay the $150 CAD processing fee and $85 biometrics fee if you haven't provided biometrics in the last 10 years.
Continue your studies while your application is processed. Maintain full-time enrollment and keep records of your academic progress.
Applying after your study permit has already expired (losing implied status)
Not having an updated letter of acceptance from your DLI
Insufficient proof of financial support for the extended study period
