What this free IELTS practice test does
This is a free 15-minute IELTS-style diagnostic for anyone considering Canadian immigration. It samples two of the four IELTS skills โ Reading and Writing โ and gives you an estimated IELTS band score and a CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) level. CLB is the metric IRCC uses to score language ability for Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, work permits, and citizenship.
The test is built and maintained by Go Far Global, a Toronto-based RCIC-licensed Canadian immigration firm with offices in Tehran and Damascus and a coming Dubai office. How the IELTS band score is calculated
IELTS reports four band scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) on a 9-band scale, in whole and half-band increments. Each section is graded independently:
- Reading and Listening are scored out of 40 questions, then converted to a band. For Academic Reading, 15/40 โ Band 5, 23/40 โ Band 6, 30/40 โ Band 7, and 35/40 โ Band 8. Our 10-question diagnostic scales linearly to these thresholds.
- Writing is graded on four criteria, each weighted equally: Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. The four criterion scores are averaged to produce the section band.
- Speaking is also graded on four criteria: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. Speaking is not yet covered in this diagnostic.
Our writing grader is calibrated against the official IELTS public band descriptors. It tends to score conservatively, since real IELTS examiners are strict and an over-generous score harms you when you show up to a real test thinking you are at Band 7 and score 6.
IELTS band to CLB conversion
The Canadian Language Benchmarks scale runs from CLB 1 to CLB 12. IRCC maps IELTS bands to CLB levels using a published equivalency chart. The mapping varies slightly by section. Here is the practical summary used by Express Entry:

What CLB level you need for Canadian immigration
- CLB 7 across all four skills: minimum for Federal Skilled Worker Express Entry. Earns 16 to 17 CRS points per skill.
- CLB 8 across all four skills: earns 22 to 23 CRS points per skill, a meaningful improvement.
- CLB 9 or higher: maximum language CRS contribution, earning 31 to 32 points per skill. This is where most current ITAs sit.
- CLB 5 to 6: enough for some Provincial Nominee Program streams, study permits, and Canadian Experience Class for NOC TEER 2 or 3 jobs. Below the Federal Skilled Worker threshold.
- CLB 4: minimum for some work permit categories and citizenship by grant.
IELTS vs CELPIP: which one should you take?
IRCC accepts both for all immigration programs, plus TEF Canada and TCF Canada for French. The choice between IELTS and CELPIP usually comes down to convenience and confidence, not score:
- IELTS General Training is paper-based or computer-delivered, available in over 140 countries, and scored on the same 9-band scale used worldwide. Take this if you are outside Canada or already familiar with the format.
- CELPIP General is fully computer-based, uses Canadian English, and is most common for applicants already in Canada. CELPIP scores on a 12-point scale that maps directly to CLB, making conversion simpler.
- TEF Canada or TCF Canada for French is a major CRS lever. Adding French at CLB 7 to your existing CLB 9 English profile can add 50 or more CRS points and unlock category-based draws with much lower cut-offs.
How to improve your IELTS or CELPIP score
Most candidates who self-study can move one full band in 6 to 12 weeks. The highest-leverage moves:
- Take a full mock test under timed conditions before studying. Use this diagnostic for Reading and Writing, and the free official IELTS or CELPIP sample tests for Listening and Speaking.
- Identify your weakest skill. CRS is determined by your lowest score across the four skills, so a 9-9-9-6 profile scores the same as 6-6-6-6 for the lowest-skill bracket.
- Practise the format, not just the content. IELTS Writing Task 2 has specific structural conventions (introduction, two body paragraphs, conclusion) that examiners look for.
- Read in English daily. Canadian newspapers (Globe and Mail, CBC), academic articles, and technical writing build the vocabulary and density that IELTS Reading rewards.
- Practise speaking with native speakers or in structured CELPIP/IELTS speaking groups. Pronunciation and fluency improve with reps, not study.

What is the CLB level for immigration to Canada?
CLB stands for Canadian Language Benchmark. IRCC uses it to score language ability for Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, work permits, and citizenship. The scale runs from CLB 1 (very basic) to CLB 12 (native-like). The most common minimum across federal economic programs is CLB 7 in all four skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). Canadian citizenship by grant requires CLB 4.
Is CLB 7 good for Canada PR?
CLB 7 is the floor for Federal Skilled Worker Express Entry, not the ceiling. It earns 16 to 17 CRS points per skill (with a spouse) or 16 (without). You meet the eligibility threshold but you will not be competitive in current draws unless your other CRS factors carry the weight. Most successful candidates today have CLB 9 or higher across all four skills.
What does CLB level 7 mean in IELTS?
For IELTS General Training, CLB 7 maps to Listening 6.0, Reading 6.0, Writing 6.0, and Speaking 6.0. For IELTS Academic, the Reading conversion is slightly stricter (Band 6.5 for CLB 7). The exact thresholds are set in IRCC's published language equivalency chart.
How much is 8777 in CLB?
"8777" is shorthand for IELTS scores of Listening 8.0, Reading 7.0, Writing 7.0, Speaking 7.0. On the CLB scale this maps to Listening CLB 10, Reading CLB 8, Writing CLB 7, Speaking CLB 7. The lowest of those four (CLB 7 for Writing and Speaking) is what IRCC uses to score your Express Entry CLB bracket. To unlock the next CRS bracket, you would need to push Writing and Speaking to IELTS 7.5.
Can I get Canadian PR with CLB 5?
Yes, but only through specific streams. CLB 5 is below the Federal Skilled Worker minimum. It can qualify you for Canadian Experience Class for some NOC TEER 2 and TEER 3 jobs, certain Provincial Nominee Program streams, the Atlantic Immigration Program, and some pilot programs. French at CLB 5 in particular opens additional pathways through the Francophone Mobility stream and Quebec's programs.
How accurate is this free IELTS practice test?
The reading band estimate is generally within 0.5 to 1.0 of a real IELTS Academic Reading score for most users. The writing estimate is calibrated against the IELTS public band descriptors but cannot fully replicate human examiner strictness. Treat the result as a directional indicator before booking a real sitting, not a substitute for it.
Is this an official IELTS or CELPIP test?

What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?
Academic is required for university admissions and for some regulated professions. General Training is what IRCC accepts for almost all immigration purposes (Express Entry, PNPs, work permits, citizenship). The Reading sections differ โ Academic uses denser, more technical passages; General Training uses workplace and everyday materials. The same 9-band scoring applies to both, but General Training requires more correct answers for the same band.
How can my real IELTS or CELPIP score affect my Express Entry CRS?
Language is one of the largest CRS contributors. CLB 7 in all four skills earns 16 to 17 points per skill (with a spouse) or 16 (without). CLB 9 or higher earns the maximum 31 to 32 points per skill. Going from CLB 7 to CLB 9 across all four skills adds 50 to 80 points to your CRS โ often the difference between an ITA and being passed over.
How do I improve my IELTS or CELPIP score quickly?
Three highest-leverage moves: (1) Take a full timed mock test to identify your weakest skill, since CRS is determined by your lowest of the four scores. (2) Practise the test format itself (IELTS Writing Task 2 has a specific structure examiners look for). (3) Build daily English exposure through Canadian news, academic articles, and structured speaking practice. Most candidates who self-study with focus can move one full band in 6 to 12 weeks.
Why do I need to provide an email to see my results?
We email a copy of your estimated band so you can revisit it when planning. If your CLB level qualifies you for specific Express Entry, PNP, or work permit pathways, an RCIC-licensed consultant from our team may follow up. Your email is never shared with third parties.
How long does this diagnostic take?
About 15 minutes. The reading section has two short passages (around 400 words each) with 5 multiple-choice questions per passage. The writing section asks for one 150 to 300-word response on an immigration-related prompt.
Does this test cover Listening and Speaking?
Not yet. The current version covers Reading and Writing only. Listening (with audio clips) and Speaking (with voice grading) are planned for a future version. For a full four-skill assessment, book an official IELTS or CELPIP sitting.
